Footnotes

  • Some USN ships referred to by changed hull prefixes, ie: CVA’s became CV’s, DE’s became FF’s, some DLG’s became CG’s, a few listed here became DDG’s.

  • Note the difference in the use of the tack (dash). USN is between the type (AO) and hull number (AO-145). MSC usage is to have it between the T (MSC) and the type (AO) and not between the hull number (T-AO 145). Most other navy’s of the world don’t use it between the type and hull number (D 259). It comes down to where their tradition comes from; European or US, etc.

  • Consol tankers (commercial charter) are referred to as SS (steamship) or M/V (motor vessel ie. diesel). Some may have prepo behind the name which indicates a prepositioned vessel, usually a roll-on/roll-off type with military vehicles in some lovely place such as Diego Garcia waiting the call to go someplace sandy and meet a bunch of Marines recently flown in. They usually have a rank/rate in front of the name.

  • MSTS was a charter vessel to what became MSC in 1970
